Plans for the Technology Building at NVCC

Site Plans for the Technology Building at NVCC

Location:

Sited to the immediate east of Ekstrom Hall, the New Technology Building has a prominent position on the NVCC Campus. Its location will reinforce the internal connections that exist presently while also creating a dramatic architectural expression visible to both the campus community and the larger community beyond. A new interior bridge across an exterior landscaped open area will connect Ekstrom Hall to the new building creating an extension of the “5th Avenue” corridor. A bold entry element facing E-Lot will mark the front door to the building and for many students, will become the front door to the campus as a whole. The intersection of this new end of the “5th Avenue” corridor and the new building entrance is highlighted by an entry atrium space that will serve as a dynamic gathering point for all members of the campus community. The atrium space becomes the heart and crossroads to the building’s multiple programmatic functions.

Construction Type:

The architectural design of the 100,000 square foot 3-story building continues the modern expression of the main campus while establishing a distinct identity that reflects the main function of the building as a place for innovation. This approach is reflected in the exterior design which combines a contemporary expression of masonry and glass with a unique geometric form. The use of glass specifically will create a transparency through the building. At night, interior lighting will create illuminated patterns and glowing forms that will create a new landmark for the overall campus and showcase the internal programs within. The public front of the building is marked by abstract monumental masonry columns, a metal sun-shade canopy and a 2-story glass wall that celebrates and defines entrance.

The interior of the building is characterized by visual connections to the outside and common open spaces. It continues the modern expression of the exterior. This is enhanced by innovative applications of terrazzo floors, masonry, and a glass tile accent wall which in combination with the building’s dynamic geometry create unique educational areas. Overall, the building will provide state-of-the-art teaching spaces and exciting interior and exterior spaces that promote and allow for community interaction.
