Counseling Center Services

The counselors in the counseling center assist students with a variety of career, educational and personal concerns. Appointments may be made in person in Kinney Hall, Room 519 or by telephone at (203) 575-8025. You can also e-mail us at counseling@nvcc.commnet.edu.

  • Academic Advising - Academic counseling is offered to assist students to recognize the options that are available for their educational planning, to illustrate the need to plan ahead, to learn the language of educational planning, learn the adequate sequence of courses, identify academic requirements and electives, and develop an overall educational plan.

    • NEW students to the college should visit the admissions section to learn more about the admissions process and program requirements.

    • RETURNING students to the college should contact their faculty advisor
  • Career Planning - Career planning is essentially an educational and developmental process which is strongly dedicated to student self-realization and self-direction. The counseling center offers a variety of career planning opportunities including; a three credit course, a free 8 week Career Planning Seminar, a computerized career program (Sigi 3) that can be accessed by any computer on or off campus.

  • Transfer Planning - Students who plan to transfer should meet with their academic advisor, or see a counselor early in their academic studies. Credits that are transferable and applicable vary from college to college so it is critical that you learn about the college of your choice, and their transfer process.

  • Personal Counseling - The distinguishing characteristic of counseling is its primary concern with the whole nature of student development. Counseling services for personal concerns are provided by professionally trained counselors. Some concerns that are brought to counseling include but are not limited to; academic issues and dilemmas; making life, career, and education decisions; developing self-confidence; managing stress and alleviating personal barriers to success in college. Referrals to outside agencies are made as needed.
