NVCC welcomes discussion on the War in Iraq

WATERBURY, Conn. (Feb. 5, 2008) – Why did America go to war in Iraq?  Was it our right to do so?  What is the wisest course of action at this time?  Are we helping or hurting the Iraqi people?  What is the aftermath of continuing to deploy our troops versus bringing our soldiers home now?

The Behavioral and Social Sciences Division of Naugatuck Valley Community College will host an all-inclusive debate on issues relating to the War in Iraq on February 22, 2008 from 12-3:30 p.m.  Anyone interested in learning about or discussing the realities, opinions and points of concern surrounding the War is welcome to attend.

The distinguished guest debaters are Dr. James Jay Carafano, Assistant Director for the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Institute for International Studies of Heritage Foundation in Washington D.C, and Dr. Michael Schwartz, Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and author of numerous scholarly works on the war, including the book “War Without End: The Iraq Debacle in Context.”

As prospective presidential candidates engage the nation in their advocacy/condemnation of the War, it is an important time for citizens to become educated on the complexities and implications the War holds for our future.  The debate intends to extract fact from fallacy, encourage discussion, and promote self-evaluation of our own beliefs and preconceptions.

“The Great Debate” is free and open to the public.  A Middle Eastern buffet and refreshments will be available at 12 p.m. prior to the beginning of the debate, which will take place at the NVCC Main Stage, 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.  For more information contact the Behavioral and Social Science division (203) 596-2101.
