WATERBURY (March 7, 2007) — The Student Government Association (SGA) at Naugatuck Valley Community College has raised almost $3,500 so far through a series of fundraisers to help the American Cancer Society (ACS).
The SGA began its yearlong ACS fundraising efforts in October and plans to wrap them up with the Relay for Life in Middlebury in June. They include:
Selling paper stars and moons from October to June that can be posted at the college with someone’s name for $1 each;
A “lock up” event on Feb. 28 where college faculty and staff whose lives have been affected by cancer agreed to be “locked up” in a mock prison on campus until enough pledges were raised for them to “make bail;”
“Cue up for the Community,” which includes collecting proceeds from the college’s game room, where pool games cost 50 cents each, for the month of March;
Having a team of students, faculty and staff at the Tribury Relay for Life in Middlebury June 23-24, which will include camping out overnight and delivering proceeds from all four fundraising events to ACS.
“The Relay for Life is something we’ve done many times, but the SGA felt strongly this year about doing more for the American Cancer Society because cancer affects so many people at the college in one way or another,” said SGA President Kyle Robinson.
“We planned these events to keep awareness going throughout the year and also make more a significant financial contribution to ACS,” he said.
Located off exit 18 on Interstate 84, NVCC serves more than 10,000 credit and non-credit students from 35 communities across western Connecticut from Litchfield to Waterbury to Seymour to Southbury and Danbury.
