March events at NVCC

WATERBURY (Feb. 16, 2007) — The following is a calendar of March events at Naugatuck Valley Community College, which serves 35 communities across western Connecticut from Litchfield to Waterbury to Seymour to Southbury and Danbury:

FRIDAY, MARCH 23

Naugatuck Valley Community College is holding a half-day conference, “Body Image and the Media,” on Friday, March 23 that will feature speakers and workshops that explore the influence of the media on how women feel about their appearance.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Margo Main, a clinical psychologist who has treated eating disorders for more than 25 years and most recently co-authored “The Body Myth: The Pressure on Adult Women to be Perfect.” Workshops will include discussions on body images in advertising, body image and aging, representation of body image in film, and the male body image and steroid use, and other topics.

The conference, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Mainstage theater on NVCC’s main campus, located at 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury. For more information, contact Karla Ekquist at (203) 596-2102.

THURSDAY, MARCH 29

Naugatuck Valley Community is holding a Health and Wellness Expo on Thursday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Café West on the fifth floor of Kinney Hall on its main campus, 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.

Admission is free. Exhibits will include blood pressure assessments, cholesterol and glucose testing, skin cancer screening, spinal screening and pulmonary function testing, as well as back massages and a variety of alternative healing techniques like Reiki, acupuncture and Feng Shui. SATURDAY, MARCH 31

The Connecticut Cactus and Succulent Society is holding the first day of its two-day annual sale and show on Saturday, March 31, at Naugatuck Valley Community College, 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.

The show will be held in the fifth-floor cafeteria inside the Fine Arts Center at NVCC. Admission is free. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 1. Free plants will be given to the first 50 attendees or families each day.

The show features displays, auctions, educational demonstrations and 20-minute lectures on a variety of topics, including, “Hardy Cacti for the Connecticut Garden” and “Oddities of the Succulent World.” For more information, visit www.ctcactusclub.com or call (860) 489-8356.

SATURDAY, MARCH 31

The eighth annual Connecticut Wine Symposium, co-sponsored by Naugatuck Valley Community College’s hospitality management department, will be held Saturday, March 31 at NVCC, 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.

The all-day event, which begins at 8 a.m., will be a gathering for wine lovers and grape growers of all abilities. The featured speakers include Elizabeth Trendowski, a renowned liquor liability consultant, who will speak about social host liability issues for businesses and homeowners.

The symposium, which will be held in NVCC’s Founders Hall, will also include seminars on a variety of wine-related topics, as well as a luncheon buffet and afternoon wine tasting. As per state law, participants in the wine tasting must be at least 21 years old.
