Arts events at NVCC in December
WATERBURY (Nov. 16, 2006) — The following is a calendar of arts events in December at Naugatuck Valley Community College, which serves 35 communities across western Connecticut from Litchfield to Waterbury to Seymour to Southbury and Danbury:
Sokolow NOW!, the Sokolow Dance Foundation’s Archival Company, will join the Dance Ensemble at NVCC Dec. 1 to perform Anna Sokolow’s ‘Dreams: A Response to the Holocaust.’
FRIDAY, DEC. 1
Members of Sokolow NOW!, the Sokolow Dance Foundation’s Archival Company, will join the Dance Ensemble at Naugatuck Valley Community College on Friday, Dec. 1, to perform Anna Sokolow’s “Dreams: A Response to the Holocaust.”
The 8 p.m. performance will be in the Mainstage theater in the Fine Arts Center at NVCC, 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.
In addition to “Dreams,” the performance will include the Dance Ensemble performing “Desire” from Sokolow’s full-length work “Rooms” and pieces by other great American choreographers like Donald McKayle. The ensemble will also perform, “Awakening,” by James Robey, director of Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance, who also will dance his own solo work.

SATURDAY, DEC. 2
On Saturday, Dec. 2, Naugatuck Valley Community College presents its second annual “Art Jam,” an evening of electronic music composition, modern dance, monologues and artwork.
The 8 p.m. performance will be held in the Mainstage theater at the Fine Arts Center on NVCC’s main campus, located at 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury. The evening will include work from students in all six majors in NVCC’s Department of the Arts. Guests will include the Clark Dance Theatre Company and James Robey, Director of the Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance.

FRIDAY, DEC. 8
The Naugatuck Valley Community College Choir presents its first ever student-run International Christmas Concert on Friday, Dec. 8, at 8 p.m. at the Mainstage at NVCC’s Fine Arts Center, located on its main campus at 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.
The performance will feature five NVCC student conductors in their first public appearance, leading the choir in Christmas favorites.

SATURDAY, DEC. 9
The Naugatuck Valley Community College Jazz Ensemble will swing into the season as it presents its “Pre-Holiday Jazz Band Bash” on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. on the Mainstage at NVCC’s Fine Arts Center, located on its main campus at 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.
Joe Jacovino will direct the 25-piece ensemble, which will perform a variety of big band and holiday favorites, including such standards as “In the Mood,” “Jumpin' At the Woodside,” “Let It Snow,” and “I'll Be Home For Christmas.” Vocal soloists with the band will be Daria Verelly and Katrina Volikas.

TUESDAY, DEC. 12
The Naugatuck Valley Community College Concert Band, also known as the Wind Ensemble of Western Connecticut, presents its Winter Holiday Concert on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mainstage theater at NVCC’s Fine Arts Center, located on its main campus at 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.
The performance will feature a range of musical styles, including “Christmas Goes to Vegas.” The concert will also feature the NVCC Dancers in “That ‘70s Music” with themes from the movies “Jaws,” “Star Wars,” and “Saturday Night Fever.”
