Sokolow Foundation dancers join NVCC students for Dec. 1 performance of Holocaust ‘Dreams’

WATERBURY (Nov. 9, 2006) — Anna Sokolow, the renowned modern dance choreographer born in Hartford in 1910, is best known for her works of passionate social commentary.

Members of the Sokolow NOW! dance company will perform ‘Dreams,’ the classic Anna Sokolow piece about the Holocaust, at NVCC on Dec. 1.

Sokolow’s signature piece, “Dreams,” created in 1961, is a compelling visual expression of her shocked outrage at the Holocaust.

On Friday, Dec. 1, members of Sokolow NOW!, the Sokolow Dance Foundation’s Archival Company, will join the Dance Ensemble at Naugatuck Valley Community College to perform “Dreams: A Response to the Holocaust.”

The 8 p.m. performance will be in the Mainstage theater in the Fine Arts Center at NVCC, 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury. A suggested $10 donation will be collected at the door.

In addition to “Dreams,” the Dec. 1 performance will also include the Dance Ensemble performing “Desire” from Sokolow’s full-length work “Rooms” and pieces by other great American choreographers like Donald McKayle. The ensemble will also perform, “Awakening,” by James Robey, director of Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance, who also will dance his own solo work.

Eight members of Sokolow NOW!, including Artistic Director Lorry May, will be in residence at NVCC the week before the performance, working with students to in classes and rehearsals to prepare for the concert. Established in 2003 in Attleboro, Mass., Sokolow NOW! aims to preserve Sokolow’s extraordinary legacy for future generations.
