Arts events at NVCC in October

WATERBURY (Sept. 15, 2006) — The following is a list of arts events scheduled in October at Naugatuck Valley Community College, which serves 35 communities across western Connecticut from Litchfield to Waterbury to Seymour to Southbury and Danbury:

Rodney Moore, a member of Toxic Dancers dance company, will teach a ‘master dance’ class in hip hop at NVCC on Oct. 2.

MONDAY, OCT. 2

Naugatuck Valley Community College is offering a “master dance” class in hip hop on Monday, Oct. 2, giving students from the college and the community the opportunity to learn from an instructor who has mastered the style.

The class will be held from 4 to 5:15 p.m. in Room A404 of the college’s Fine Arts Center, located on its main campus at 750 Chase Parkway off exit 18 on Interstate 84 in Waterbury. It will be taught by Rodney Moore, a member of Toxic Dancers dance company and a student at Central Connecticut State University.

Naugatuck Valley Community College is offering a “master dance” class in belly dancing on Friday, Oct. 6, giving students from the college and the community the opportunity to learn from an instructor who has mastered the style.

The class will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Room A404 of the college’s Fine Arts Center, located on its main campus at 750 Chase Parkway off exit 18 on Interstate 84 in Waterbury. It will be taught by a dancer who goes only by her first name, Katie. A student of Middle Eastern dance since 1999, Katie has studied with national and international masters in belly dance. Naugatuck Valley Community College’s New Zenith Theatre group will perform “A Showcase of Shorts” beginning Thursday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mainstage Theater at the Fine Arts Center on NVCC’s main campus, 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.

“A Showcase of Shorts” is three one-act plays geared for young people, age 10 and up. They include: the drama “Cyrano,” a musical comedy called “The Diary of Adam and Eve,” and a classic Shakespearean comedy, “Puck’s Dream.” There will also be performances Oct. 13-14.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students. Proceeds will help fund a cultural exchange program this fall that is sending New Zenith’s NVCC students to Stockholm, Sweden. For more information, call (203) 575-8038 or reserve tickets online at www.newzenith.com.

SATURDAY, OCT. 28

A free screening of the film “City of Joy” will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at Naugatuck Valley Community College as part of its first ever Unity Film Festival.

The film follows the story of an American surgeon who quits medicine and travels to a ghetto outside of Calcutta, India, after a patient dies on the operating table. There, he stands up and fights for the people's rights.

It will be shown in Room E440 in Eckstrom Hall. It will be followed by a discussion and free refreshments. It is the second movie being shown as part of NVCC’s first Unity Film Festival, which is sponsored by the Unity Film Festival Committee of the Congress of Connecticut Community Colleges. The first film, “Mexico City,” was shown on Sept. 30.
