Health care workers should register now for continuing education courses at NVCC

WATERBURY (Aug. 14, 2006) — Registration is now open for health care professionals looking to upgrade their skills through the continuing education program this fall at Naugatuck Valley Community College.

NVCC is offering dozens of courses this fall in the health care field. Some classes begin as soon as this month, while others begin in September, October, November and December.

In addition to offering traditional courses that allow nurses, patient care technicians and other health care professionals to meet their continuing education goals, NVCC is also offering:

  • A free orientation on Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. for NVCC’s newly revised phlebotomy technician program, which provides training in the classroom, a new state-of-the-art simulated lab and clinical opportunities to help meet the expanding demands on phlebotomy technicians. The program has been revised to provide more of the skills now required by the job, including computer skills, medical terminology, specimen processing and an introduction to health care systems;

  • A free orientation on Tuesday, Sept. 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. for NVCC’s medical coding and billing specialist program. Students who go on to enroll in the NVCC program after the orientation will learn the beginning skills necessary to work in the field at physician offices, insurance companies, hospitals and other health providers;

  • “Patient Confidentiality: Everyone’s Job, Not Everyone’s Business,” a two-hour course on Nov. 3 or Nov. 8 that will explain why confidentiality has become such an issue in health care today, and what you can, or can’t, discuss at the dinner table when you get home from work.

All of NVCC’s fall continuing education courses for health care professionals are outlined in its new Health Care Careers catalog, which recently arrived in mailboxes throughout the 35 communities served by NVCC, a region covering much of western Connecticut from Waterbury to Seymour to Southbury and Danbury to Litchfield.

For more information about these and other allied health courses at NVCC, or to receive a catalog, visit www.nvcc.commnet.edu or call (203) 575-8029.
