NVCC boating safety courses in July, August offer one-day certification

WATERBURY (June 29, 2006) — Anyone who operates a recreational boat or jet ski in Connecticut is required to have a state-issued certificate proving they have successfully completed a class in basic boating safety and passed an exam administered by the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Naugatuck Valley Community College is offering eight courses in July and August that allow students to complete their safety course and take the exam — both in just one day.

The “Connecticut Basic Boating/Personal Watercraft” courses are offered on Saturdays at NVCC’s main campus at 750 Chase Parkway in Waterbury and at NVCC’s Danbury Training Center, 12 Crosby St., Danbury.

The Waterbury courses, which run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will be held July 8, July 22, Aug. 5 and Aug. 19. The Danbury courses, which run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be held July 15, July 29, Aug. 12 and Aug. 26.

Successful completion of the course allows students to obtain a Connecticut Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation, enabling them to operate recreational vessels up to 65 feet long, including a jet ski. The course, which costs $99, is approved by the state of Connecticut, as well as the National Association of Boating Law Administrators, and is recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard.
