HOURS OF OPERATION
The Public Safety Department is operated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

MISSION STATEMENT
It is the Mission of the Naugatuck Valley Community Colleges Public Safety
Department to promote a safe and secure campus environment through the delivery of quality
and professional police, emergency medical, and assistance services to all who use the
campus.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Public Safety Department patrols the following areas: Naugatuck Valley Community
College and its surrounding property and the Automotive Technician Center located at 2200
Thomaston Avenue, Waterbury.
The Public Safety Department is responsible for the safety
of students, faculty, staff and visitors while on the campus of the Naugatuck Valley
Community College. The Public Safety Department is made up of two components: Patrol and
Communications.
PATROL DIVISION
The Patrol Division is composed of both Police Officers and Building and Grounds Officers.
Both are trained to meet the special needs of the Naugatuck Valley Community College.
All Police Officers are trained at the Connecticut Police
Academy. After graduation, these officers must maintain review training as mandated by law
while employed by the State of Connecticut. Police Officers at Naugatuck Valley Community
College maintain powers of arrest while employed by the State of Connecticut and enforce
all criminal and motor vehicle laws.

The Communications Division employs two Telecommunications Dispatchers. The Dispatchers

WEAPONS \ ALCOHOL \ ILLEGAL DRUGS
Weapons of any kind are not allowed on the campus. Police Officers and persons with state
and local permits must contact the Campus Public Safety Department concerning the carrying
of their weapons on campus. Also, consult the Student Handbook for the Policy of the Board
of Trustees for Community Colleges concerning weapons.
Alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs of any kind are not
allowed on the campus. Also, consult the Student Handbook for the Policy of Board of
Trustees for Community Colleges concerning the possession of drugs and alcohol.
SPECIAL SERVICES
The Public Safety Department coordinates student patrols, provides escort services,
parking lot security, parking decals, first aid, and acts as a liaison with joint
investigations between the Chief State's Attorney, State Police, and State Fire
Marshalls Office.
The Public Safety Department encourages all persons to
report any suspicious persons or acts of criminal nature while on campus. All information
is kept confidential.
ESCORT SERVICE
The Public Safety Department provides an escort service to students, faculty, staff and
visitors requesting such assistance by calling extension 8113 or using the nearest
assistance phone located in elevator lobbies around campus. An officer will meet the
individual and provide the escort. This service is free of charge.
PARKING
Students, faculty, staff and visitors must obtain a parking permit in order to park on
college property. Parking Permits are free of charge and available at the Public Safety
Department Office (see map).
HOW TO REPORT A CRIME
The Public Safety Department encourages all persons to report suspicious persons or acts
of a criminal nature while on campus.
The following suggestions may be used for all acts of a criminal nature. All information
is kept confidential.
1. Go to any assistance phone, raise the handset or any
office phone and dial extension 8113, for routine calls or 8112, for emergency calls.
2. Give the person who answers the phone the following
information:
a. name of person making the complaint
b. your current location
c. nature of complaint
d. name and description of persons involved
e. direction of travel (if known)
f. time of occurrence
g. injuries (if any)
3. Stay near that phone and an officer will assist you.
4. When speaking with the officer, please try to remember
as much information as possible to relay to the responding officer - e.g. description of
person, including hair color, clothing, skin color, etc.
